Finding good, low-calorie snacks for a fair price can be challenging. I usually devote one day a month to go in search of good deals on low-calorie snacks. Yesterday I went to the grocery outlet, walmart, target, and big lots in hopes of finding some snacks I can have on hand without paying out my entire bank account.
Most of the work in finding a good deal is knowing what the typical price you pay for something is. For instance, 6 pack boxes of 100 calorie packs of assorted treats are usually $2.50-$4.00 at a grocery store. I don’t buy them unless I can get them for under $2.00 each, such as on sale or at the grocery outlet. I buy flavored rice cakes, baked lays, and nuts in bulk sizes and measure them with my food scale to a portion. I buy 60 calorie pudding cups on sale because they are only 1 point compared to 2 points when you make your own pudding, and I never pay more than .25 cents each. I figure that’s how much I’d spend making it when I factor the prices for milk and fat free/sugar free pudding mix.
Finally, I only go shopping for food once a week. If I need something fresh, I might make an exception, but usually not. By only shopping once a week, I save money and force myself to plan out a weeks worth of meals ahead of time. This saves calories too! As I said before, I take one day about every month to find snacks to stock up on. This means I only buy meal food during my weekly shopping trips.
